The TRLAULALA study

TRALULALA is a nationwide Danish research program investigating respiratory health in children and adolescents born with esophageal atresia (EA) and associated tracheomalacia (TM).

Our aim is to provide the evidence needed for high-quality, evidence-based and uniform respiratory follow-up. The program combines national registry data, patient-reported outcomes, lung function, imaging and prospective follow-up across seven work packages.

WP1 · National Registry Study

Using Danish national health registries, we investigate the incidence of EA and long-term respiratory morbidity. Further analyses are ongoing.

WP2 · Patient-Reported Outcomes ✓ Completed

Exploring quality of life and respiratory symptoms from the perspective of children and families, including translation and validation of the Danish EA-QoL questionnaire.

WP3 · PILOT Lung Function Study ✓ Completed

A broad range of lung function methods were evaluated in children and adolescents with EA to identify relevant tools for assessing respiratory disease.

WP4 · National Cross-Sectional Study ● Ongoing

A nationwide assessment of children and adolescents with EA combining symptoms, lung function, imaging, exercise capacity and quality of life to characterize respiratory health across childhood.

WP5 · Prospective Cohort ● Ongoing

Longitudinal follow-up will investigate how respiratory symptoms, lung function and disease burden develop over time.

WP6 · EA Biobank ● Ongoing

Blood samples collected through TRALULALA are stored in the Odense biobank, enabling future studies of biological mechanisms and biomarkers.

WP7 · Steering Group

The national steering group oversees the scientific direction of TRALULALA and supports collaboration and translation of research findings into clinical care.

Together, the work packages bring us closer to a structured national respiratory follow-up program for children born with esophageal atresia.
